Always keep your car keys in the same place. Seemingly obvious, we know, but you’d be amazed how many people don’t follow this simple practice. Don’t, however, keep your keys where they could be seen by someone passing your house or ‘hooked’ through your letter box from the outside and stolen.

• Use a key ring with tracking technology linked to an app on your smartphone.
• Look again – carefully – where you first looked. There’s a good chance your keys really are where you thought you had left them but, in your rush, you missed the fact they had slipped under those letters on the coffee table.
• Ask a locksmith to make you a duplicate car key, before you lose the only one you have left!
