Firstly, you might hear locksmiths talk of ‘cylinder locks’. As the name suggests, a cylinder lock combines the keyhole and pin tumbler mechanism in a cylinder. The pin tumbler is a pivoted piece in a lock that holds the bolt in place until the pins are lifted by a key. The varying lengths of the pins prevent the lock from opening without the correct key. When, however, the pins are correctly aligned, the cylinder can turn, releasing (or ‘throwing’) the bolt. The door opens.

So where does that knowledge leave us?

‘Anti-snap’ locks are designed to prevent burglars breaking into properties through the act of ‘lock snapping’ (or ‘cylinder snapping’). The burglar’s intention is to snap the cylinder, essentially with tools and brute force. That done, the burglar tries to remove the outer part of the broken cylinder lock to expose, and gain access to, the remaining part of the lock mechanism. But if you use an anti-snap lock made by Ultion, for example, the would-be intruder will be denied entry. When attacked, a central section of the cylinder enters ‘lock down mode’, becoming immovable and resistant to aggressive force, meaning the burglar cannot remove enough of the lock to open the door.
